Human rabies Ig
Indications/Uses
In combination w/ rabies vaccine in post-exposure prophylaxis of rabies infection after exposure to scratches, bites or other injuries caused by a suspected rabid animal; mucous membrane contamination w/ infectious tissue or saliva of a suspected rabid animal; contact of mucous membranes or newly skin injury w/ rabies live attenuated vaccine eg, vaccination baits.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Administer as deeply as possible into & around the wound. Inj the remainder into the vastus lateralis muscle. May be given SC in case IM inj is contraindicated & coagulation disorder is present. Recommended dose: 20 IU/kg. Post-exposure prophylaxis Single dose of rabies Ig & full course of rabies vaccine.
Special Precautions
Do not administer into a blood vessel. Patients w/ IgA deficiency. May induce fall in BP w/ anaphylactic reactions. Observe patients for at least 20 min after administration. Possibility of infective agent transmission. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions including fall in BP, dyspnoea, cutaneous reactions; generalized reactions eg, chills, fever, headache, malaise, nausea, vomiting, arthralgia & moderate back pain; CV reactions; local pain at inj site, tenderness or swelling.
Drug Interactions
May impair efficacy of live attenuated virus vaccines eg, measles, rubella, mumps & varicella vaccines. False +ve result in serological testing.
